Women's Centre Volunteer

Dept: Women's Centre       Posted: March, 15, 2010

The WLU Women’s Centre is a student service which strives to build a community of people and ideas that challenge and examine gender inequalities. We firmly believe that everyone should have equal access to education in a positive learning environment. We hope to provide a space where women can feel safe and affirmed, in recognition of the gender-specific barriers and inequalities that women face.

In an effort to instigate change, this woman-positive, woman-centred space offers an extensive collection of academic, community and informational resources, as well as opportunities to actively engaging in awareness campaigns. That said, the Women’s Centre is also a place to have fun, meet new people, pass the time between classes or unwind at the end of the day.

The Women’s Centre is entirely student-run, and operates on a modified collective model using consensus-decision making. Simply put, this means that everyone is equal and has equal decision-making power, and that decisions require everyone to come to an agreement before moving forward.

  • Volunteers are required to hold at least one Office Hour a week. During your office hour, you keep the space open, greet visitors, shelve returned books, etc.
  • Volunteers are also required to attend the weekly Women’s Centre meeting, held on Sundays at 7:00pm. If you are unable to attend meetings, you are responsible to keep up-to-date with meeting minutes, collective emails and voice your opinions on collective decisions in other ways.
