Somebody who’s transgender identifies with a gender other than what they were assigned at birth. For example, if when you were born the doctor (or midwife) said "It’s a girl!" (by which they actually meant "it’s female!", but that’s another conversation), people called you she, and raised you as a girl, but later on in life you realized that that doesn’t quite fit, and that you actually identify as a boy, or as a man, or as a guy, or as a butch, or as genderqueer, or as any gender other than "girl" or "women", then you may be transgender. Being transgender doesn’t necessarily have to relate to how you feel in your body (although it can), but more about how you identify and how you express that identity.
