Ethics and Responsibilities Policy

All ResNet users must be familiar with and adhere to the Principles in the Use of Information Technology at Wilfrid Laurier University - see URL http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=158&p=2209

ResNet users are responsible for all hardware and software unrelated to their network connection. This includes any desktop applications like Word Processors or Spreadsheets or peripherals such as Sound Card, Mouse, Monitor, or Printer.

ResNet users are responsible for the security of any/all data and equipment owned by the user. It is recommended that system data be backed up at regular intervals and that all precautions are taken in securing any/all data and equipment.

At no time will a ResNet users be allowed to connect more than one computer device onto the campus network per data outlet (including hubs, switches, or routers), unless you have the expressed authorization from the ResNet Coordinator.  All contraband equipment found will be confiscated, the offending ResNet user will have their network service terminated immediately and will be reported to the Manager of Housing Services & ResLife for disciplinary action.

No ResNet users will use their ResNet network connection to sell or otherwise distribute ResNet network access or services to any other person or faculty.

Enabling File & Print Sharing (this is network setting on your computer not P2P) is not restricted, though it is not recommended. Either way, ResNet users are prohibited from looking at, copying, altering, or destroying anyone else’s personal files without explicit permission from the owner. The ability to access a file, printer or other information does not imply permission to do so.

Harmful activities are prohibited. Examples include IP spoofing; creating and propagating viruses; port scanning; disrupting services; damaging files; or intentional destruction of or damage to equipment, software, or data.

Any downloading or distribution of illegal or pirated material, such as software or media,(ie. Music, MP3 files, MPEG videos) are considered unethical and will not only result in immediate termination of network access, but may lead to legal ramifications from both WLU and any anti-piracy association (eg. Canadian Recording Institute Association).

ResNet users may not run or otherwise configure software or hardware on the ResNet network to intentionally allow access by unauthorized users. Web servers, FTP servers, Mail servers, and any other software that allows unauthorized access are not allowed and will result in immediate termination of network access.

Although remote IRC and Internet News services can be used, servers offering these services are not permitted and will result in termination of network access.

Access to the ResNet network from the residence is both a privilege and a service that can be withheld at any time. Any ResNet user found to be engaging in harmful or illegal activities will have their network connection terminated and will face disciplinary action from the university which may include expulsion from residence and/or legal prosecution.
