How It Works

The contraceptive sponge is a disposable soft round piece of foam that is inserted into the vagina. It foams a barrier covering the cervix and contains spermicide. It can be inserted in the vagina 15 min –2 hours before intercourse. It should be left in place for over 6 hours after intercourse and removed no longer than 12 hours. Never re-use a sponge.

You are less likely to get pregnant and risk STI’s if a condom is used at the same time.

-once inserted, it allows for repeated intercourse within 6 hours

-easy to carry

-non-hormonal

 

Disadvantages

-not to used during your period

-cannot be used if you or your partner are allergic to spermicide

-need to learn technique for insertion and removal

-may cause increase in vaginal discharge and yeast infections
