Diaphragm

Diaphragm

Effectiveness: 87-94%

Cost: approx $40.00. You must see a physician to be fitted for a proper size.

How it Works

The diaphragm is a round, flexible latex cap which covers the cervix during intercourse. It should be used with a spermicidal cream. The barrier blocks the sperm and the spermicide kills it. It must be left in the vagina for 6-8 hours after intercourse. Wash hands before and after insertion and removal. It must be washed, dried and stored after each use, and checked for holes or tears before each use.

Advantages

-It is inexpensive, with care it can last 1-2 years.

-It can be inserted a short while (up to 2 hours) before intercourse

-If inserted properly both you and your partner should not feel it.

-May protect against some STI’s

-It is a reversible form of birth control

Disadvantages

-It requires expert fitting and instructions on how to use. May need to practice technique.

-It should be refitted if there is a weight gain or loss of 10 pounds or more and periodically checked.

-It may increase your risk of getting urinary tract infections
