Condoms are readily available at drug stores, supermarkets, Health Services, the C spot.

 

Condoms Work By:

The condom is a thin sheath of latex which tightly covers the penis and prevents sperm form entering the vagina. Pre-ejaculate can contain sperm (or infectious secretions) so the condom must be put on before the penis is any where near the vagina.

 

Advantages

The only contraception that helps prevent the transmission of some STI’s

Gives men an active role in birth control

Inexpensive and readily available

Can be used with other methods of birth control to decrease risk of becoming pregnant.

May provide men with longer lasting erections

 

Disadvantages

You need to have one available at the time

Some people notice a decrease in pleasurable sensation

There is a risk of breakage or slippage ( see emergency contraception)

May Cause allergic reaction in either partner

Inhibits spontaneous lovemaking

 

How To Use:

-Check expiry date on package. The package should be sealed and not ripped.

-Keep condom in a dark dry place away from heat- not in wallet.

-Put a drop of water-based lubricant or saliva in the condom

-It is highly recommended that a spermicide, available as a foam, gel, or cream, be used with a          condom

-Only use water based lubricants. Never use oil based lubricants such as petroleum jelly.

-Roll condom on the erect penis before intercourse.

-Leave a centimeter space at the tip if the condom does not already have reservoir.

-Pinch air out of the tip and unroll to the base of the penis.

-Smooth out any air bubbles

-Lubricate penis before entering

-The penis should be withdrawn before it becomes soft. Hold condom at the base of the penis before pulling out. Be careful not to spill any semen.

-Throw condom in the trash.

-Use a NEW condom for each act of intercourse. Only use once.

-For mouth to penis contact use condoms which are dry (not pretreated with lubricant) to avoid bad taste.

 

The Female Condom

Differences:

Cost $4.00 each

Available in fewer places, The Stag Shop and some pharmacies

 

-Insertion can be done hours before intercourse.

-It is a polyurethane sheath, which is a thin and supple kind of plastic. It does not contain latex.

-It is bigger to fit the vagina

-It has 2 rings. The inner ring is used to insert the condom and keep it in place. The outer ring remains outside the vagina.

 

Remember

-Use new condom with each sex act.

-Guide penis into the outer ring so that it does not by pass the condom.

-After ejaculation remove condom before standing up and throw it away in the garbage.

-The condom makes noise. To reduce noise, try changing position or adding a more lubricant to the inside.

-If the outer ring disappears your have to interrupt lovemaking and put it back in place.

-If the condom breaks or spills, seek emergency contraception

-Two condoms together do not work.
