Cervical Cap
Effectiveness: 70-80%
Cost: $30-$40.00 each
The cap must be fitted by a physician, often a specialist, and purchased at a pharmacy. It is not covered by the school health plan.
The cap is a small rubber device that is shaped like a thimble and fits tightly over the cervix. It is held in place by suction. It should be inserted at least 30 minutes before intercourse and stay in place up to a minimum of 8 hours after ejaculation (but not longer than 24 hours). It must be washed and dried and stored after each use. Spermicide should always be used with it and a condom will increase its effectiveness against pregnancy and STI’s.
