Cervical Cap

Cervical Cap

Effectiveness: 70-80%

Cost: $30-$40.00 each

The cap must be fitted by a physician, often a specialist, and purchased at a pharmacy. It is not covered by the school health plan.

How It works

The cap is a small rubber device that is shaped like a thimble and fits tightly over the cervix. It is held in place by suction. It should be inserted at least 30 minutes before intercourse and stay in place up to a minimum of  8 hours after ejaculation (but not longer than 24 hours). It must be washed and dried and stored after each use. Spermicide should always be used with it and a condom will increase its effectiveness against pregnancy and STI’s.

Advantages

-inexpensive

-similar to the diaphragm

-can be inserted 2 hours before intercourse

Disadvantages

-must be fitted by a physician

-can become dislodged during intercourse

-it may cause changes in the cervix that could alter pap results

-it should not be used during your period

-it may cause unpleasant odours

-not to be used if just given birth, had an abortion or other pelvic surgery
