Abstinence

Abstinence

Effectiveness: 100%

Cost: none

How It Works:

Abstinence means no vaginal or anal intercourse for a certain period of time. This method will protect you from pregnancy and STI’s if you are not having oral sex. It is important to talk to your partner about what it means to both of you. Abstinence does not mean you can’t enjoy your partner and feel good about being with each other. You can express your feelings for each other in other ways. See http://waterloo.mylaurier.ca/health/info/Abstinence.htm

Advantages

-100% effective against pregnancy

-It can be a temporary decision or a life choice

-You don’t have to be a virgin to be abstinent

-Prevents STI’s

Disadvantages

-Requires self control. Both partners are required not to get caught-up in the moment and work together.
