Stress

What You Can Do To Relieve Stress

  What is Stress?

Stress is the body’s response to any demand or pressure. These demands are called stressors. Stressors cause our bodies to make physical and chemical adjustments in order to maintain the necessary physiological balance for survival.  A racing heart, a rise in blood pressure and muscle tension are the body’s physical responses to demands.

The Signs of Stress:

  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Poor concentration
  • Irritability
  • Cold sweats
  • Clenched Jaw
  • Fast Heart rate
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache

The Goals of a Relaxation Program:

  • Immediate:
    • To feel a little more relaxed than before
  • Long Term:
    • To make it part of your daily routine
    • To have it become almost second nature to you

Here are 10 easy steps to relaxing!

  1. Be aware of stress in your life. Write a priority list and deal with one thing at a time.
  2. Eat and Sleep. Eating healthy food and getting a good night sleep will give you the energy you need to deal with stress. Pulling all-nighters only makes you less able to concentrate.
  3. Create realistic expectations. Don’t expect to be perfect.
  4. Breathing! Try to focus your breathing when you feel stressed out. Close your eyes, take a deep breath slowly through your nose, and breathe out slowly.
  5. Develop a personal relaxation scene. Pick a favourite memory when you were feeling relaxed. Now focus on this scene when you are feeling stressed out.
  6. Finding time for yourself. Give yourself a break if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Find a spot and rest.
  7. Muscle relaxation technique. Learn how to alternately tighten and relax your muscles. This will help you to become aware of when your muscles begin to feel stiff due to stress.
  8. Worst case scenario. When you are feeling worried about a specific problem, just try to imagine what would happen in the worst case scenario. You may just be worrying a little too much.
  9. Stay healthy, be active. Exercise is a great way to stay active and relieve stress. Do something you enjoy. Listen to music or make a date with a friend.

 10. Asking for help from others – friends, parents, doctor, professor, or counselor – is a sign of strength. It will help you lighten your stress load and allow you to gain alternative perspectives
