Programming for Dons

The SHDC peer educators can help you provide programs and educate your students on various health topics.  Programming packages are available by request.

Available programs include:

Nutrition Outreach: "Let’s Get Healthy"

Objectives:

  • to dispel common food/nutrition myths
  • teach skills needed to make healthy food choices to optimize performance
  • identify a variety of "healthy" options on campus
  • identify professional resources on campus 

 This fun interactive presentation includes yummy, healthy, snacks and shakes. It is suitable for floor meetings. Time: approx 45 min - 1 hr depending on group size.

Sexual Health Outreach: "Condom Gotcha"

Objectives:

  • Identify different risks associated with sexual activity
  • Identify options and choices surrounding sexual activity
  • Increase awareness of campus and community resources

Great icebreaker! Game Format: Generally runs for a week or so. At week’s end a group meeting is held and discussion of results demonstrates risks and choices associated with sexual activity. Either the don or the Health Education Nurse may facilitate this session. Complete package including rules of play, condoms, and STD and Birth Control options provided. Package available through SHDC.

Sexual Health Outreach: "Sexual Trivia"

This jeopardy style game promotes the awareness of the risks and choices surrounding sexual activity. It covers topics such as STI’s and birth control.

To be played with 2 teams of 5-15 people. Works well at floor meetings.

Stress and Relaxation Outreach: "STEPS: Strategies to Effectively Prevent Stress"


  • to identify stressors common to students
  • to identify lifestyle issues which contribute to stress
  • to increase awareness of physical manifestations of stress
  • to teach simple relaxation exercises that can be practiced individually
  • to identify campus and community resources for help or further info.

Facilitated by Residence Dons. The program recognizes that ignoring stress or not dealing with it can cause serious problems. Students are provided with a variety of information, through packages received by their residence don, on recognizing stress and how to deal with it and on a variety of campus and community resources.

(This program includes Tips of the Week sent to all dons from September to December)

Responsible Use of Alcohol: "Drink - Tac - Toe"

(Adapted from the program developed by Queen’s University)

Objectives:

  • Increase knowledge about the action, effects and gender differences related to alcohol
  • Identify and/or reinforce harm reduction strategies
  • Link excessive use of alcohol and drugs to negative outcomes for self and others
  • Identify campus and community resources for help or further information

Fun, interactive Tic Tac Toe game format: Promotes discussion of issues surrounding alcohol use and abuse. 9 different categories include Sex and Alcohol, Gender Benders, Pot Pourri (drugs, marijuana, cocaine etc) Includes self-evaluation quiz. Suitable for smaller groups - need 2 teams of 5 - 15 people. Works well at floor meetings. Takes about 45 min - 1 hr depending on number of games played. Loaned through SHDC.

Marijuana Facts: "Reefer Madness"

This fun, interactive , jepardy style game promotes awareness of the effects of marijuana. It covers topic such as legal knowledge and social factors. To be played with 2 teams of 5-15 prople. Works well at floor meetings.

Passive Programming Requests:

If you need ideas for a bulletin board or display area, the SHDC has a number of materials available at your request. We have a Poster lIbrary whick you may borrow posters covering a variety of health related topics. Suggested topics include smoking cessation, alcohol/drug use, birth control and/or sexually transmitted diseases, safe travel, and nutrition.

If you have a specific idea we probably have some materials on the topic. Drop by and see what we’ve got.
