Tutoring Program

The ALC Tutoring Program is available for registered ALC students that require tutoring assistance. The purpose of this program is to aid with specific class learning or exam preparation/review. To determine eligibility, interested students should contact their Consultant. If you are eligible for this program, your Consultant will refer you to the Educational Planner. The Educational Planner is responsible for administering the Tutoring Program. Referrals to screened tutors will be made in addition to a review of recruitment strategies if a tutor is not available.

Tutors are not guaranteed for every subject and timeline. Students are asked to be actively involved in finding tutors. Strategies include meeting with the professor, T.A or working with other students in the class. Supports and services offered through WLU’s Learning Services are also a great option, (Mathematics Assistance Centre, Study Skills & SI Centre, and the Writing Centre )

Approved tutors with the ALC Tutoring Program have been selected based on their academic achievement and tutoring ability. Keep in mind, working with a tutor is not guaranteed to improve academic performance. Rather, it is a tool to assist your learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions to confirm that the tutor is a suitable match. Tutors are paid an hourly fee ($15-30/hour) and your Consultant can assist you with exploring options for financial assistance to help with the cost of tutors.

Neither tutors nor students may engage in any activity that constitutes academic misconduct as defined in the University’s Undergraduate and Graduate Calendars. Academic Misconduct may include but is not limited to writing other students’ papers, in whole or in part; completing other students’ assignments, in whole or in part; and assisting with coursework that will be marked (such as online quizzes, problem sets, and take-home exams). Both tutors and students should make themselves aware of what constitutes academic misconduct.

It is your responsibility to contact the Accessible Learning Centre staff (Tutoring Program staff or your Consultant) if you are not satisfied with your tutor or if you have any questions or concerns. You are not required to continue with your tutor if you are not satisfied. However, if you discontinue working with your tutor, you are required to pay for the sessions up to that point.

PROCESS FOR REQUESTING A TUTOR

1. Talk to your Consultant before you hire a tutor. If appropriate, your Consultant will approve your request for a tutor. In some cases, tutoring may be covered by the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) or the Accessible Learning Accommodation Bursary (ALAB). If you require financial assistance, please discuss this with your Consultant and if this is your last term, please talk to your Consultant within the first 30 days of the term. Eligibility for the BSWD and ALAB will be determined by Student Awards. You must apply to OSAP to determine eligibility for either of these bursaries.

2. Fees for tutoring range between $15 and $30 per hour depending on the tutor’s level of education and experience. Please pay the tutor after each session. If you meet with the tutor before you receive your bursary cheque, it is your responsibility to pay for the tutor directly. If it is determined that you are not eligible for the bursary, it is still your responsibility to pay the tutor.

3. Complete the purple request form with your Consultant. The staff of the tutoring program will email you names of tutors that you can contact. You are responsible for choosing the tutor you wish to work with.

4. You do not have to select a tutor from the list that is emailed to you, but you must talk to us to have your tutor approved if you will be paying the tutor with money you receive from the bursary. To be approved, tutors are required to complete an application form and have a short interview.

5. Choose your tutor. Meet with your tutor and review the “Tutor-Student Confirmation of Roles and Responsibilities.” Pay your tutor.

6. Use the "Tutor Receipt" (available in Arts 1C9, Arts 1C11, online or from your Consultant) to keep track of your tutoring sessions.

7. If you are using bursary funds, hand in the signed "Tutor Receipt" to the main office, Arts 1C11 by the end of the term at the latest.
