Student Support

Student Support

The Student Support Program connects students registered with the ALC with volunteers who can assist them in their university lives through a variety of tutorials and workshops.

Student Support can range from navigating ALC services, campus orientation, getting involved in campus life, ITS new user’s tutorials, student support services orientation and individual requests. Tutorials are conducted in one on one or small group settings organized by the Educational Planner, and facilitated with either student support coordinators or student support volunteers.  These students are knowledgeable, trained volunteers with the ALC and have a desire to help other students. Tutorials will be approximately 30 minutes covering structured, but not limited information, regarding the subject of choice. In most circumstances student support tutorials will be held in Room 1C9 Arts Building.

Process

ALC Students wanting to benefit from the Student Support program can access a request form from the ALC main office in Room 1C11, the education planner’s office in Room 1C9 Arts Building or directly from their consultant. The student will then be contacted via email or phone to set up an appointment time to meet with the volunteer.  Students are not limited to the number of tutorials they can attend.

Currently offered Workshops and Tutorials

ITS new user support Students will be giving hands on tutorials on the following technical educational tools commonly used at Laurier: MyLearningSpace including but not limited to the note-taking system on MLS, MyLaurier email account and LORIS.  This tutorial would be ideal for first year students wanting to build their confidence using these widely used communication tools.

Campus Life Students wanting to get more involved in the school community but are feeling overwhelmed by all the opportunities and choice or are not sure what’s out there, will benefit form this one on one workshop session.  Students will receive information on volunteer opportunities, campus job opportunities, intramural sports, clubs and groups.

Student Support Services Orientation Students requesting information regarding the student support service offered at Laurier will receive valuable information regarding these services and a guided tour of their locations. This one on one or small group tutorial will cover health services, counselling services, learning services, chaplains, SNAC,  Diversity and Equity Center, Rainbow centre, Career Center etc.   Giving students an opportunity to ask questions and see where these services are located will give students the confidence and the knowledge to access them if, and when needed.

Navigating ALC Services Students wanting to take part in this tutorial can be prepared for a one on one, hands on tutorial helping them through that navigation process of ALC services, focusing on, but not limited to, deadlines, systems and responsibilities as a student. This tutorial will aim to all give brief descriptions on Academic Support services for students with disabilities such as alternative-format, assistive technology, exam accommodations, learning strategists, note-taking accommodation, tutoring and student support. Students are encouraged to come prepared with specific questions regarding services.

For students requesting Campus Orientation, assistance or mapping getting to and from class - this could assist in finding the most accessible route to and from classes for students with limited mobility. Students may also request a volunteer to walk with them to act as a sighted guide or assist in another ways for medical reasons. This service could be on going for students requiring regular assistance or a one on one guided orientation for students needing information.Disability Campus Orientation
