Shatekohseh:kwen or Mid-Winter Ceremonies: What are they?

Date: Feb 8/12       Time: 5:00 PM       Location: Aboriginal Student Centre       Posted by: Melissa Ireland

Mid winter or Shatekohseh:kwen is the traditional longhouse Haudenosaunee new year ceremony. It occurs five sleeps after the 13 full moon, and it is a time of renewal and thanksgiving. During the time period of mid winter, 8 different ceremonies occur. For Haudenosaunee people, we believe that there are 4 sacred ceremonies that the creator gave to us, all of which occur during mid winter ceremonies.
